Research on Nazi Loot in Libraries

Thanks for the most part to funding made possible by the Arbeitsstelle für Provenienzrecherche/-forschung, AfP (Bureau for Provenance Investigation & Research) in Berlin, many libraries in Germany have developed projects dedicated to tracking down Nazi loot in their holdings. The conditions in these institutions vary greatly, with regard to determining provenance as well as taking into account the extent to which the National Socialists redistributed the confiscated property for their own benefit. Thus, several important and essential research projects have been formed, for example, the Bergungsstelle (Center for Archival Recovery) in Berlin, which extensively analyses records, as well as the efforts to investigate the role of the Reichstauschstelle (Central Exchange Authority) that are carried out by the Staatsbibliothek Berlin (Berlin State Library).
