Research Coordination Efforts

The Koordinierungsstelle Magdeburg, the central German public (federal and state) institution set up for the documentation of cultural property and lost cultural assets, maintains the online Lost Art database.

Since 2008, the Arbeitsstelle für Provenienzrecherche/-forschung (Bureau for Provenance Investigation & Research, abbr. AfP), which is located at the Institute for Museum Research of the State Museums in Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, has supported museums, archives, libraries and other cultural institutions—both institutionally and financially—in their search for cultural artifacts in their collections that which were unlawfully seized during National Socialist regime. Since 2008, the Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Commission on Culture and Media, abbr. BKM) has made funds totaling one million Euros available each year to support the ongoing research. Starting in 2012, the budget for this effort will be doubled.
