NS loot in the acquisitions made between 1933 and 1945

Duration: 2011-2013
Sponsor: Arbeitsstelle für Provenienzforschung (AfP)

Printed material and manuscripts, as well as maps acquired between 1933 and 1945 from the inventory of the former Saxon State Library, were the objects of investigation in this project. References to previous owners, which were determined by examining the individual media units, were recorded in a database according to the standardised vocabulary of the thesaurus of provenance terms (T Pro) and evaluated. In the next step, the identified persons and institutions were matched with in-house documents, external archives and databases. In cases of confirmed or suspected Nazi loot, the corresponding media were documented, reported in the Lost Art online database and a search was made to find the heirs or legal successors of the previous owners.

As a result, more than 1,000 cases of Nazi loot or suspicion of an item belonging to the Nazi loot have been reported to the Lost Art database.
